Caught with three strikes

A burglary suspect was simultaneously nabbed by a Mountie on foot coming from one direction and a police service dog coming from another, and ended up automatically busted by probation authorities at the same time.

Police converged on this suspect when a resident of Redwood Street called 9-1-1 after coming home to someone inside the house holding his TV.

"The male, who was wearing all black, dropped the TV and fled the area," said Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass. "Police service dog Baron and his handler were called in to track the suspect."

The burglar was seen getting on a bicycle, so other police units were also called to widen the search.

"We were getting reports about the suspect, as he was seen here and there, so we were hot on his tail," said Douglass. "A couple of officers were able to track him down and had visual contact with him, they had basically moving in on him, and at the same time the dog had been tracking him all this time and arrived at the suspect at the same time, which just further confirmed that it was the correct suspect, and they had him going both directions."

Soon after the suspect was brought to cells, a call came in from the city's probation service. After initial steps to locate a parolee on the lam, they wanted to discuss canvassing the public for location tips. A Canada-wide warrant had already been issued.

"We were able to tell them hey, it's done, we just picked him up, he was in custody," said Douglass.

The 29-year-old Fort St. James man now faces charges related to the break-and-enter as well as the parole violations.
