Carney Street closing one week for water main installation near new Prince George fire hall

No access starting June 8 between Winnipeg Street, Ellison Drive

If you regularly commute through or near Prince George’s outdoor recreation district, you’ll soon have to set an alternate route on your GPS.

The city says Carney Street will be closing for one week starting Monday (June 8) as crews install a water main that will connect to the new fire hall, which remains under construction along Massey Drive next to the YMCA.

The section between Winnipeg Street and Ellison Drive will be blocked off for vehicles and pedestrians starting at 7 a.m. that morning and the city says all homes and businesses in the area have been notified of the upcoming construction work.

Signs will be put up during construction to direct traffic, a news release explains.

Northbound motorists on Massey Drive wanting to turn west onto Carney Street will be detoured north via 17th Avenue, Spruce Street and 15th Avenue.

Those that head southbound and wanting to reach the intersection of Carney and Winnipeg Streets will be directed via a 15th Avenue detour.

The new main Prince George fire hall is being built as voted in a 2017 referendum, when residents voted 83 per cent in favour of the project, and to account for faster 9-1-1 response times.

“The new fire hall will be approximately 50 per cent larger than Fire Hall #1, which it will replace, and have the capacity to house a modern Emergency Operations Centre and Fire Operations Communications Centre,” reads a city statement today (June 4).

“The new location on Massey Drive is more centralized and will greatly increase the area firefighters are able to reach within the critical eight-minute response time.”

Construction for the new fire hall is an estimated cost of $15 million.

The city adds water service in the affected area of Carney Street will be shut off for five hours on Tuesday (June 9) as part of the installation process.

Residents are asked to run tap water until it's clear, if it appears cloudy.
