A Cariboo Connector project is now underway near Prince George

Work has begun on widening nearly 3.5 kilometres of Highway 97 South to four lanes from two between Old Cariboo Highway and Sintich Road.

The project costs $17 million and will take a year to complete. It is part of the $200-million phase two of the Cariboo Connector four-laning program.

It will tie into the existing five kilometres of four-laning from Simon Fraser Bridge to Sintich Road, completed in 2010 as part of phase one of the program.

The work will include enhancements at the Haggith Creek culvert to reduce erosion and maintain the creek's water quality.

Once phase two is complete, nearly half of Highway 97 from Cache Creek to Prince George will be either three or four lanes.
