An anonymous local resident has donated $5,000 to help a local woman featured in a story in The Citizen last week.

The story provided details about a fundraising event Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Treasure Cove show lounge for Dorothy Horton, who is struggling with breast cancer as her terminally ill daughter, a new mother, lies in hospice in Calgary.

The organizer of the event, Margaret Camilli, got a real surprise when her husband Chris called her and asked her if she was sitting down.

"At first I thought it was bad news about the fundraiser," Camilli said.

The opposite was the case.

"A lady, who wants to remain anonymous, has donated $5,000 to Dorothy, saying that she was inspired to do so because of the story she read in the Citizen," said Camilli. "This wonderful lady went through similar circumstances herself, which is really eerie. She was dealing with her own breast cancer as her daughter got sick and passed away from a tumor on her brain stem - a different cause than genetics that caused Dorothy's daughter's case but the same heartbreaking struggle."

Tickets are still available for the dinner, dance and silent auction for $30 each at Papyrus Printing, 2358 South Ospika Blvd. All proceeds will go to Horton. For more information, to donate to the silent auction or to buy tickets call Camilli at 250-964-1496.
