Canadian Tire helps kids play

Canadian Tire believes strong communities include strong children who should all have the chance to run, skate, play, and grow.

Canadian Tire believes strong communities include strong children who should all have the chance to run, skate, play, and grow.

The company has a program called Jumpstart that helps children nation-wide participate in organized sports and recreation such as hockey, dance, soccer and swimming.

"It's our way to help kids four to 18 develop important life skills, self-esteem and confidence," said Dave Shuvera, general manager of Canadian Tire in Prince George.

When the UNBC commerce students recently raised $600 for the Jumpstart program, Canadian Tire added to it for a total donation of $2,100 to local chapter members YMCA, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and Kid's Sports.

National in scope but local in focus, Jumpstart delivers support to children who could otherwise not afford to participate, said Shuvera.

To date there are 279 Jumpstart chapters across Canada, and since the program was launched in 2005, more than 216,498 children have been given the chance to play.
