Canada Day explosions were not bombs: RCMP

Prince George RCMP had no bomber nor even a vandal to investigate after a couple of bangs disturbed Canada Day In The Park.

Prince George RCMP had no bomber nor even a vandal to investigate after a couple of bangs disturbed Canada Day In The Park.

Police and firefighters surrounded an area of Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park late Canada Day afternoon after two booms echoed across the crowded fields. The point of interest was a garbage bin. Activities and festivities were unaffected at the time, and there were no injuries.

Police have now concluded their investigation and told The Citizen on Monday that they discovered what caused the explosions and who was responsible.

Although it was human-caused, it was not deliberate.

"We determined the source to be spray-foam insulation containers," said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass. "They were large in size and the contents expanded in all the heat, so it eventually went off inside the garbage receptacle. It was merely coincidence that activities were happening nearby, coincidence that it happened on Canada Day."

Douglass said police were able to piece together clues leading to the person who last handled the insulation containers. From that person it was determined "that there was absolutely no ill intent at all" by that person.
