A campfire ban for the Cariboo Fire Centre west of the Fraser River was lifted Thursday due to the cooler wetter weather, but caution is continuing to be urged.

Campfires must remain no larger than a half-metre wide to a half-metre tall, flammable debris must be removed from around the site and a hand tool, such as a shovel, or at least eight litres of water must be available to fully extinguish it.

"Never leave a campfire unattended and make sure that the ashes are completely cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time," the B.C. Wildfire Service said in a press release. "

The public is also reminded to never light or keep a campfire burning in windy conditions."

Burning of waste or slash piles is still prohibited.
