Imagine the difference the gift of a purse filled with necessities could have for the life of a woman in need.

The Fill A Purse for a Sister Campaign, which is in its fifth year, aims to collect 12,000 purses and backpacks for women and youth in shelters and crisis centres across Canada.

“Most of us take our purses everywhere with us, but most women in shelters don’t have a purse,” said campaign founder Angel Freedman in a news release. “The Fill a Purse for a Sister Campaign not only provides women and youth with a purse or backpack to call their own but also the gift of dignity.”

The campaign now running in Prince George, and the organizers are encouraging individuals, community organizations, schools and businesses to get involved until the Dec. 1 deadline.

“The need continues to grow, along with the number of people who are joining the campaign and sending a message of caring and hope to women and young people in need,” said Martyne Todd, community lead for Prince George, in the same release.

The goal of the program is to help boost the confidence of women in shelters who are working to rebuild their lives.

Donors are encouraged to fill the purses and backpacks with practical items like tissues, tampons, lip balm, gum, gift cards, gloves, scarf, hair clips and even a heartfelt personal note.

Donors should also choose a gently used or new purse and not one that’s been worn out, ripped or soiled.

In Prince George, you can drop off your purse or backpack donations at either Contours Hair Salon (110 - 5212 Domano Blvd.), Re/Max Centre City Realty (611 Brunswick Street), or Blissful Bubbles Boutique (#110 - 3831 Austin Road W.).

The donations will be distributed locally through the Elizabeth Fry Society.
