As Prince George’s Ice Cream Express faces an uncertain future, the community has already started to try and save the iconic Cowart Road stand.
On April 8, Ice Cream Express announced on its Facebook page it would have to close down by May 31.
“When I first met the Bergmans they were nothing but extremely nice to me and welcomed me into their life as a part of their family and I feel like I owe them this after everything they have done for me and the Prince George community,” says Colton Fawcett, who is family-friends with Ice Cream Express owners Ken and Leona Bergman.
Fawcett started a GoFundMe campaign, along with the Bergman’s son Russell, to raise awareness and funds to help support the Bergmans as they try and find a new home for their business.
“Growing up as a kid one of the biggest things we had to do was to go down to get ice cream from the ice cream express and it was so rewarding knowing that you could bike ride or skateboard on down and go get some ice cream at the end of a long day,” says Fawcett.
“I really hope that they can stay running so families that are still in Prince George have something nice to do and try and have the exact same experience I had when I was a kid.”
He adds that the Bergmans are not the kind of people that would ask for help, so he decided to take it upon himself to start the campaign.
“My biggest hope is that Ken and Leonna can find a new location that is convenient for everyone and they can keep serving ice cream and keep their business running.”
Fawcett says that the Bergmans work extremely hard to keep the stand running, and the business has always been a passion for them.
“I know a lot of people say it’s just ice cream, who cares, but I really feel like little places like this are what make Prince George, Prince George,” says Fawcett.
“I hope this message goes far. I would really love to see the whole community contribute towards this cause because it is unfortunate to see little monuments like this fade away from the town.”
