Anyone buying a camera this Christmas should be sure it comes from a reputable source.

RCMP in Coquitlam are dealing with an unusual break-in and theft involving thousands of dollars of cameras and equipment, Sgt. Steve Reinhart says in a news release.

He is seeking public assistance in solving the theft from Coquitlam camera shop on Nov. 15

Anyone with information can call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS) or online at www.solvecrime.ca.

To prevent shoppers from becoming the unwitting owner of stolen or counterfeit goods RCMP advise shoppers and bargain hunters to be extra-cautious when using a website for the first time or when dealing with unfamiliar businesses or people.

Be skeptical about online or secondhand products by asking questions and paying attention to detail such as original packaging, visible serial number, original manuals and documents, receipts and other proof of purchase or ownership.

Be wary of items priced below normal and remember that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

When on an online auction site, be wary if someone contacts you after bidding has closed, saying they have similar goods available or that the original seller has backed out. This could indicate they have a large quantity of merchandise which could be stolen.
