Police in Northern B.C. are dispatching a call to the public.
The North District RCMP's emergency communications centre (OCC) is hiring 9-1-1 operators and dispatchers for their telecommunications team based at the regional headquarters in Prince George.
The hiring process for the OCC requires a series of steps for those interested. The first step is to attend a career presentation meeting, and one has been scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. at North District RCMP Headquarters located at 4020 5th Avenue (at Ospika Boulevard).
The basic requirements for an RCMP telecommunications position are:
- Proof of high school graduation or equivalent;
- Approved typing certificate with a minimum 40 words per minute (error rate less than 5 per cent);
- Must be a Canadian citizen;
- Must be 19 years or older;
- Must be willing to work shift work including nights, weekends and holidays;
- Must attend a full-time seven-week training program at the Pacific Region Training Centre in Chilliwack followed by a full-time apprenticeship program (approximately six months) in Prince George.
Before anyone is hired to work in the OCC a candidate will have to take fill out an aptitude form, be interviewed by a panel of police telecommunications professionals, pass an RCMP security clearance, and pass a medical/psychological evaluation. It takes several months to complete all stages.
