Nick Poisson continues to be the hottest player on the ice for the Prince George Spruce Kings.

The alternate captain kicked into a higher gear Tuesday night (Nov. 19) on Vancouver Island, scoring two goals in aiding the defending B.C. Hockey League (BCHL) champions fight to a 4-3 comeback victory against Alberni Valley.

“Starting off on a big road trip, that’s a big win for the team and that’s good momentum coming into a couple games on the road here,” said Poisson to Spruce Kings TV post-game.

The 18-year-old reached the 30-point mark after scoring a pair yesterday, his team-leading 10th and 11th goals, which also extended his point streak to six in three games and averaging one point in his last 10 games.

He was also one of two Spruce Kings named Tuesday to Team Canada West’s selection camp alongside Fin Williams in hopes of landing a spot on the roster for the 2019 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge in Dawson Creek in December.

The Bulldogs barked to a three-goal lead early in the second period, scoring all of them in a 2:13 span and all by different players.

Prince George was awarded a power-play later in the frame as Alberni Valley’s Caige Sterzer was called for interference, allowing Poisson to find the back of the net on a pass from Nolan Welsh and erase a potential shut out.

Captain Welsh responded over five minutes later on even-strength to make it a 3-2 contest after 40 minutes and the long assist credited to Evan Orr.

From the opening face-off the third period, the Spruce Kings went to work right away in hopes of starting its five-game road trip on a positive note.

Turns out, Jaxon Steele only needed 98 ticks to pot his second marker of the 2019-20 season for a 3-3 score.

Corey Cunningham earned an assist on the tying marker.

Poisson seized an opportunity all on his own at 5:25 of the final stanza and get the visitors their first lead of the night.

The final buzzer went off at Oceanside Arena, allowing Prince George to triumph 4-3.

Despite the second period’s shaky start, goaltender Jett Alexander nabbed his 10th BCHL win by stopping 30 of 33 shots from the Bulldogs.

The game was played in Parksville as the Alberni Valley Multiplex was closed earlier this month due to an ammonia leak.

The Spruce Kings record bumps up to 10-12-2-3 as they prepare for tonight’s (Nov. 20) clash in Nanaimo, 7 p.m. against the Island Division-leading Clippers.
