Call 811 first if experiencing flu symptoms

In order to reduce the rate of flu transmission, the provincial government is encouraging people with flu-like symptoms to call 8-1-1 before seeking medical care at a doctor's office or emergency room.

In order to reduce the rate of flu transmission, the provincial government is encouraging people with flu-like symptoms to call 8-1-1 before seeking medical care at a doctor's office or emergency room.

The 8-1-1 telephone health number allows patients to connect directly with a registered nurse who can help identify the symptoms a patient is experiencing and guide them towards the best course of action.

Because the flu is transmitted through the air, it can easily be spread when infected patients visit medical facilities unnecessarily.

The 8-1-1 line is available 24 hours a day with translation services in more than 130 languages.

The government also advises using proper cough etiquette and hand washing techniques and advises people to stay home when they feel sick.
