College of New Caledonia health sciences students are turning the pages on a new year in hopes of raising money to buy an automated hospital bed.

Proceeds from sales of the CNC calendar for 2012 will be used to help pay for a $5,000 electric bed for the nursing simulation lab.

"Our nursing students are fortunate enough to train on the lifelike VitalSim manikin simulator and this bed has functions that allow the manikin to be positioned like a real patient would," said Randall Heidt, director of communications and development for CNC.

The $5 calendar features photographs of CNC health sciences students in their classrooms. It also contains coupons that can be redeemed at local businesses. So far, calendar sales have been brisk.

"The nurses are selling it, so people get to meet the students they are helping," said Heidt. "We sold a couple hundred over the weekend at Costco and they will be at Canadian Tire [on Saturday].

"For the price of a Christmas card this calendar is something that can help you remember special occasions all year, while also benefiting students."

Heidt said if calendar sales bring in more than the price of the bed, that extra money will be used to fund scholarships, bursaries and entrance awards for heath

sciences and heath-care students.

The calendar is also available at the CNC bookstore.
