Three people are dead after a two-vehicle collision near Cache Creek late Thursday morning.

The crash occurred just prior to 11 a.m. at the major intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 99. According to police reports, the incident involved a commercial vehicle travelling southbound on Highway 97 when a northbound passenger car attempted to turn onto Highway 99 and crossed into the path of the oncoming commercial unit.

"All three occupants in the passenger car were killed as a result of the collision," said Const. Mike Halskov of BC RCMP Traffic Services.

The area around the crash site was closed to regular traffic movement for a prolonged period of time as the painstaking investigation details were collected by a number of agencies including the RCMP's Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroners Service. Single-lane alternating traffic was allowed by early Thursday afternoon, with delays of up to 30 minutes during the investigation.

The identities of those involved in the collision were not disclosed, pending the notification of victims' next of kin.
