The Prince George RCMP's seizure of a truck load of counterfeit merchandise should be seen as "an eye-opener to the public", said the media communications officer.
Cst. Lesley Smith said when designer labels sell for low prices, you can be pretty sure they are fake and not connected with a legitimate retail business.
The merchandise seized from a home business in Prince George this week, including purses, wallets, sunglasses, clothing and shoes, is believed to have been manufactured in violation of copyright or trademark laws and bears copyright or trademark logos, artwork, designs or brand names believed to be forgeries.
"Purchasing the items is not a criminal act, but people buying them should know if these designer items are not authentic. It's a buyer beware situation," Smith said.
The home businesses owner has been issued a warning letter, and no charge have been laid.
However, the investigation is continuing and the goods will be transferred to police headquarters in Vancouver for examination by an RCMP specialist to determine if they are fakes and whether they are stolen goods. Read more in The Citizen.
