The first Great Campus Smoke Out Day Oct. 6 is designed to help the College of New Caledonia become a non-smoking community and give participants a chance to win an Apple iPad.

It's the day smokers can receive advice and tips on giving up the habit with Quit support programs.

"They can also trade in their cigarettes for a Quit Now goodies bag," said Patricia Covington, CNC dean of health sciences, who's of the opinion that "quitting smoking is the most important thing anyone can do to improve their health."

A Nicotine Intervention Counselling Centre program is provided at the CNC Health and Wellness Centre and employees may also access the Employee and family Assistance Program.

Both smokers and non-smokers at the college are encouraged to complete a tobacco use survey to help plan future strategies and activities. The student union and Northern Health are assisting in tobacco reduction initiatives.
