The man facing 17 charges after RCMP seized a "staggering collection" of firearms from an upscale Prince George home in late September is the owner of a downtown business, The Prince George Citizen has confirmed.
A search of records connects Pastry Chef co-owner Karl Heinz Haus to the Hart Highlands home from which police seized the firearms on Sept. 25.
According to B.C. Assessement records, The Pastry Chef at 380 George Street is owned by KHH Enterprises Ltd. and according to a provincial government registrar of companies record, Karl Heinz Haus and Petra Haus are listed as the company's directors.
Moreover, the record lists the mailing address for the couple as 2323 Prospect Point in Prince George.
In announcing the seizure and the charges on Wednesday, RCMP identified the accused as Karl Haus, 53, and said the home from where they found the firearms is located on Prospect Point although they did not provide a specific address.
Located off Ridgeview Drive in the Hart Highlands subdivision, Prospect Point is a cul-de-sac where four houses are located.
Acting on information from Canada Border Services Agency officers, RCMP executed a search warrant Sept. 25 where they found nine rifles - a fully-automatic M-16 and a fully-automatic AK-47 among them - as well as three handguns, two of which were loaded, and two shotguns.
They also found five 100-round capacity drum magazines, 50 assault rifle magazines, four bullet proof vests and two flails - spiked metal balls attached with chains to wooden handles.
Investigators also discovered 31,000 rounds of large and small calibre ammunition.
The investigation began Sept. 9 when CBSA officers intercepted the two packages at the Toronto International Mail Centre. The packages originated in Germany and were destined for Prince George and while the accompanying information cards said "other machinery," officers parts for Colt M-16 A1 - military grade automatic rifle.
When reached Wednesday by phone before The Citizen was able to confirm Haus's identity a woman identified as Petra Haus denied he was the man arrested.
"I don't really think so, not that I know of," she said. "I'm sorry, not to be able to help you, dear."
She also denied knowing of a Karl Haus when asked.
"Not that I know of," she said.
Haus, who is not in custody, is scheduled to make a first appearance in Prince George provincial court on Jan. 15.
