B.C. Transit's bus service along Highway 16 will be extended to Terrace starting November 20, the provincial government said Monday.
Service from Prince George to Smithers and Moricetown has been in place since this summer.
The buses will run three days per week - on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays - linking the communities of Kispiox and Gitsegukla (about 41 kilometres apart) and Gitwangak and Terrace (about 100 kilometres apart).
Once-a-week service between Smithers and Kispiox will also be offered.
B.C. Transit will start advertising the schedule in early November.
"This is especially important for women and teenaged girls who are travelling and are in need of a safe link between neighbouring communities," said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claire Trevena.
Highway 16 West, from Prince George to Prince Rupert, has been known as the Highway of Tears for the number of women who have gone missing or have been murdered along the stretch.
The move comes after Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine directors approved changes to the existing Hazeltons regional transit system last week.
The provincial government is covering two-thirds of the $6.4-million over five-year cost to provide the service while local governments and First Nations are paying the remaining third.
