Prescribed burning is planned for eight locations in the Omineca region starting this week, the provincial government said Monday.
"The reintroduction of managed, low-intensity ground fires to these areas is intended to restore and maintain plant communities that are native to these areas," Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations said in a press release.
"These managed fires also reduce fuel loads, leading to a decreased risk of wildfires."
The sites are at:
- The Blackwater-Fraser ungulate winter range burn area covering an estimated 300 hectares, about 70 kilometres south of Prince George.
- The Blackwater-Kluskus burn area covering 100 hectares, about 100 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof.
- The Savory Ridge burn area covering 35 hectares, about 27 kilometres west of Fraser Lake.
- The Euchiniko River burn area covering 300 hectares, about 70 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof.
- The Stuart River burn area covering 300 hectares, about 25 kilometres northeast of Vanderhoof.
- The Ruby Rock burn area covering 400 hectares, about 75 kilometres northwest of Fort St. James.
- The Bevel Creek burn area covering 1,500 hectares, about 100 kilometres north of Mackenzie.
- The Ospika burn area covering 1,600 hectares, about 125 kilometres north of Mackenzie.
The burning is scheduled to begin Tuesday and continue through to June 7, weather permitting.
