Building permits for $14.6 million worth of construction were issued in August, according to a report from city hall.
At $3.8 million, a permit for a 4,407-square-metre building at the River Point Landing retail complex at 3030 Recplace Drive led the way.
Next highest was for a 3,636-square-metre building for Enterprise Truck Rental at 4760 Continental Way, worth $747,390.
Home construction also figured highly as a dozen permits for $3.2 million worth of single-family houses were issued along with permits for two seven-unit townhouse complexes at 7400 Creekside Way, each worth $1.04 million, and for a four-unit complex at the same address, worth $591,840.
Permits were also issued for $575,122 worth of improvements to the Tim Hortons restaurant on Massey Drive and $569,713 worth of improvements to the Hart Highway Tim Hortons.
Other permits of note were for:
- a fire renovation to Sunshine Manor at 1012 Central Street, worth $400,000.
- an upgrade to the WSI warehouse at 3980 Second Avenue., worth $350,000;
- a 1,546-square-metre agricultural outbuilding at 870 Beger Road, worth $340,000.
- improvements to 240-256 Second Avenue., worth $200,000.
In terms of total value, August was the fourth-highest month so far this year and raised the year-to-date total to $96.5 million, the highest seen by that point in four years. By the same point in 2010, it had reached $112 million before declining to $54.8 million in 2011 and then climbing back up to $92.6 million in 2012 and $91.4 million in 2013.
In 2007, the year-to-date total by the same point had reached $97.3 million before the recession struck. The totals subsequently declined to $58.9 million in 2008 and $40.1 million in 2009.
- Construction began on 17 single family homes in September, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, down from 22 starts during the same month last year.
The year-to-date total as of the third-quarter point of 2014 stands at 88 starts compared to 93 by the same point last year.
