Building permits lagging previous years

Permits for $7.7 million worth of construction were taken out at city hall last month, according to a staff report.

That's well down from $21.1 million during the same month last year and $15.7 million during May 2015.

At $5.3 million over 11 permits, new home construction led the way last month. Other significant permits included one for a new 7,727-square-foot parking facility at the city's 4050-18th Ave. public works yard, adding up to $1.1 million worth of work, and for construction of a new office building for CIF (Timberwest) at 6161 Otway Road, for $250,000.

Year to date, the total now stands at $34.3 million, down from $62.8 million by the same point last year and $15.7 million by the end of May 2016. Last year ended with a record-setting total for private sector construction.
