They’re known as the happiest place in Prince George, the manager said.
The Prince George & District Senior Citizens Activity Centre Society at 425 Brunswick Street, known best as the Brunswick Street Centre, is open once again with a full schedule of meals and activities.
The doors are wide open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There’s tai chi, floor curling and carpet bowling, yoga, line dancing, bridge, whist and the all-time favourite activity – 50/50 bingo. The Centre also serves healthy and nutritious meals created by an experienced cook who manages the Meals on Wheels to-go program as well that provides lunch to between 70 and 95 people on any given weekday.
Angela Fretter is the centre manager who has been employed by the centre in food service before she moved to events coordinator, assistant manager and then finally her current job. She’s been with the centre for 13 years.
The centre hasn’t bounced back from when the restrictions Covid-19 were imposed on indoor gatherings, Fretter said, and many of the seniors have not returned to enjoy the activities and meals offered once restrictions were lifted.
“We’ve been open fully since September and I’m not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing,” Fretter said. “Even when we were closed we still had to pay operating costs because we do the Meals on Wheels program out of this kitchen and that ate up a lot of our savings.”
She’s hoping people will make an effort to return to the Senior Citizens Activity Centre soon.
“People are still afraid of Covid,” Fretter said. “We’re just keeping our fingers crossed, hoping it’s going to pick up soon. We’re really hoping those who are interested in the activities will come and join us for some fun.”
This year they’ve got 200 members and previous numbers were closer to 500.
Meals are offered at $7.50 for members and non-members can purchase meals for $9.
Membership is $20 per calendar year, $10 for those who are 80+.
