Tragedy struck Foothills Elementary School Friday when a Grade 7 student died on the playground during recess.
The death occurred as the boy was playing on the school's field. He dove to catch a ball and never got up. Emergency personnel were called and he was transported to University Hospital of Northern British Columbia where he later died.
The cause of death remained unknown as of Saturday.
Grief counsellors will be on hand at the school today to provide emotional support, said school district superintendent Brian Pepper.
Pepper said the school district's critical events response team was at Foothills working with staff, students and parents by late afternoon Friday.
The team was also at the school on Saturday morning to provide support for the boy's classmates and their parents and will be there on today.
