The recent sex abuse scandal surrounding the Vatican has directed a menacing eye toward the Catholic community, especially concerning abuse protocol.
Sexual abuse of minors by church officials "is sad and it is wrong," said Bishop Gerald Wiesner of the Prince George Diocese.
He said a local committee is in place to deal with such allegations and background checks are performed on incoming priests.
Wiesner also addressed the issue in a letter released April 14 on the Diocese web site. "Fault on the part of the Church needs to be acknowledged and serious effort needs to be made to ensure that the abuse does not continue and that opportunities for victims to find healing be provided," he wrote. For more on this story, see Saturday's Citizen.
