The Prince George Cycling Club is gearing up for the ninth annual Bike to Work week, except this year it’s going by a new name.

Bike to Work/School Week is now known as Go by Bike Week (GBBW).

The name change is meant to be more inclusive and to engage more potential participants. We don’t just travel to work or school, right?

“GBBW is an opportunity to increase ridership in Prince George, as well as promote healthy and environmentally conscious behaviour,” says PG Cycling Club’s events coordinator Dane Greenwell, in a news release. “Events like these bring value to our community by building comradery and encouraging people to visit businesses while they explore the city.”

This year’s GGBW takes place from May 22 to June 1 and there are a number of ways to get involved.

First, if you are an experienced cyclist or just a new bike commuter you can rally your co-workers and register your workplace, or if someone else is taking the reins, join their workplace team.

Then you bike to work all week and track your kilometres; you can also attend the GBBW Celebration Stations where you can meet other participants and win fun cycling prizes.

This same process applies if you are a student, or anyone else.

You can be retired, unemployed, self-employed, have a home-based business -  it doesn’t matter, anyone can join in.

Just track your kilometres while shopping or attending meetings, or going anywhere.

It can all count towards your solo team's kilometres, as this event is all about getting out and biking.

One of the events held during the week is a group ride from the Exploration Place to the Northern Lights Estate Winery along Cottonwood Island Nature Park followed by a wind-down party at the winery.

You can check out the full list of events held during the week on GBBW’s website.

The cycling club’s goal this year is to have 1,000 registered participants; you can also register yourself, or your team for the week online.
