Bike-riding thief makes off with $10K

A lone man pedalled off with $10,000 in merchandise in the smash and grab of a downtown store early Tuesday morning. The Michael's Jewelers alarm was triggered at 5:23 a.m. when glass was smashed out of the Parkwood Place store on 15th Avenue.

A lone man pedalled off with $10,000 in merchandise in the smash and grab of a downtown store early Tuesday morning.

The Michael's Jewelers alarm was triggered at 5:23 a.m. when glass was smashed out of the Parkwood Place store on 15th Avenue.

Police with guns drawn were on scene in moments, but the suspect had already fled.

An in-store surveillance cameras recorded a figure clad in dark clothing and a mask approaching the store by bicycle just before twilight.

He was seen checking out the front windows, then approached with two interlocking bricks in hand and smashed out the front door's glass to get inside.

There is almost no jewelry kept in the store overnight, but this thief was aware of the one display case's content, went directly to it, filled a black backpack with at least $10,000 worth of white-gold wedding bands and silver bracelets, and was gone in seconds on his bike.

It was the first successful robbery in the local business's history.

Police described the suspect as being approximately six feet tall, medium build, wearing a black balaclava, black jacket, black track pants with white stripes down the side (Adidas style) and white running shoes.
