The public is invited to every open meeting of the School District 57 board of education. The turnout usually fits easily into the board room at the SD57 headquarters on Ferry Avenue at Highway 16, but tonight's meeting was moved to Vanier Hall in anticipation of hundreds more people than usual.

There are two substantive items on tonight's board agenda.

First on the agenda will be Carney Hill Elementary School's fate as a choice school. Trustees received the Aboriginal Choice School Development Team Report on Jan. 16 and deferred a decisive vote on the recommendations until the Jan. 26 meeting.

Secondly, trustees received the report from the District Sustainability Committee at their meeting last Tuesday, and tabled a definitive vote until the meeting of Jan. 26 to allow time for study of the 42 cost reduction recommendations. Closing 11 schools and altering the format of three others are among them.

Well Jan. 26 has arrived. Both topics will have their motion called and trustees' hands raised in support or opposition.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to speak must sign up prior to the start of the meeting and time is limited to five minutes per presentation.
