Evan Bichon is going to China.
The 16-year-old native of Mackenzie, who now makes his home in Prince George, has qualified as the youngest member of the Canadian snowboardcross team for FIS junior world championships, March 6-16.
Bichon has been nothing short of scintillating on the slopes this season on the NorAm circuit, consistently posting top-six finishes, including second- and third-place results two weeks ago in Quebec.
Also named to the 11-member team was 17-year-old Meryeta O'Dine of Prince George, who is also competing along with Bichon in NorAm races. They will finish the weekend with provincial series FIS races today and Sunday at Big White near Kelowna.
FIS points accumulated this season will count towards next year's team selection for the 2016 Youth Olympics in Lillehammmer, Norway. If Canada does choose to send an athlete, just one male athlete born in either 1998 or 1999 will get to go. Bichon currently leads those points standings. Bichon started racing FIS events last season.
Bichon and O'Dine are on the B.C. team that will compete in snowboard events during the second week of the Canada Winter Games. They are expected to return to Prince George on Monday.
