Beware of forged merchandise

Prince George RCMP have seized "a vast quantity" of counterfeit goods being sold by a home-run business owner.

Cst. Lesley Smith, media communications officer, said the "knock offs, designer goods or look alikes" are believed to have been manufactured in violation of copyright or trademark laws and bear a forged copyright or trademark such as a logo, artwork, design or brand name.

The "imitation" goods include purses, wallets, sunglasses, clothing and shoes.

Police, which began an investigation of the home in April, are not forwarding charges at this time as a warning letter has been issued in this instance, Smith said.

"Dealing in counterfeit products is against the law and anyone found committing such an offence is liable to face severe criminal penalties including large fines and imprisonment. The copyright and trademark owners may also take civil actions against anyone who deals in the this type of illegal merchandise."

RCMP remind the public that the sale of counterfeit merchandise is being taken seriously as it is a growing problem that generates significant losses for legitimate industry, the economy and all levels of government.

If you have any information regarding the sale of counterfeit items or would like more information about copyright and trademark laws, please contact the Prince George RCMP at (250)561-3300 or call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if you wish to remain anonymous.
