Schools that know they have the best wordsmiths have a couple more weeks to sign up for the eighth annual Canspell Spelling Bee.

The deadline for schools to register has been extended until Nov. 30. Each school holds their own spelling bee to determine an overall champion, who will then participate in the regional event, which takes place early in 2012.

The regional competition, hosted by The Prince George Citizen and sponsored by Postmedia, will give students a chance to represent their school at the national spell-off, held in Toronto in March.

"It's a great connection for the Citizen to be involved in this literacy-based initiative that gives students from all across the north the opportunity to test their abilities against their peers," said Alan Ramsay, business development officer at The Citizen and co-ordinator of the event.

So far, 25 schools have registered, 14 of which from Prince George. Other communities represented include Smithers, Vanderhoof, Dawson Creek, Fraser Lake,

McBride and Prince Rupert.

All the resources needed to host a school spelling bee are provided with the $109 registration fee and Ramsay offers support for individual co-ordinators, as needed.
