It's the time of year where the flu bug hits and students return back to school, which can add to the number of visits to the emergency room. There is also an increased demand for patients who are elderly or require care for chronic conditions that can add to the higher volume as well.

The University Hospital of Northern B.C., as well as Northern Health, are working on new measures that will aim to reduce pressures on the emergency department, but those won't happen overnight and are asking the public to be mindful of whether their injury/sickness warrants a trip to the hospital.

These changes include a current project to add 24 medical inpatient beds to the hospital's second floor.

The health authority is reminding the public how to avoid unnecessary trips to the hospital:

  • Patients who aren't sure whether their condition should send them to the emergency room, or anyone who needs health advice, call HealthLink BC (8-1-1) or visit www.HealthLink.ca for non-emergency information from nurses as well as dietitians and pharmacists. Services available 24/7.
  • For non-urgent care, use community health services such as your family doctor or walk-in clinics, when available.
  • If you are concerned about a possible poisoning or exposure to a toxic substance, call Poison Control at 1-800-567-8911.
  • If you have a cold, call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 for advice, or ask your pharmacy about over-the-counter medications.
  • Remember, flu season is approaching. Check immunizebc.ca for clinic dates.
  • If at any time you believe you require urgent medical attention, do not hesitate to go to the emergency room or call 911 for transportation.
