Be prepared, stay focused and avoid distractions
That's the message Insurance Corporation of British Columbia has for drivers who plan to take to the highways this Easter long weekend.
On average of three people are killed and 670 injured in 2,300 crashes in B.C. over Easter. For the North Central region, the count is 17 people injured in 130 crashes.
"Make sure you and your vehicle are ready for all possible weather conditions during your Easter road trip," ICBC road safety director Lindsay Matthews. "Be well rested, alert and focused on the road. We want everyone to travel to and from their Easter gatherings safely."
Here are some further tips for a safe drive:
- Do a vehicle check: Long road trips can be hard on your vehicle, especially if this is the first extended trip of the year.
Make sure your vehicle is up to the drive. Check your engine oil, washer fluid, lights and inspect your vehicle tires, including the spare, to make sure they are in good condition and properly inflated.
- Watch for weather changes: On mountain and interior routes, drivers may encounter winter-like conditions. Remember, winter tires and chains may still be required on some highways until March 31.
- Share the road: Milder weather will encourage more motorcyclists and cyclists to be on the road. Drivers should slow down, use extra caution and watch for other road users.
- Avoid distractions: Make important calls and send texts on your cell phone before you start your trip. Use rest stops to take a break, get some fresh air and check your phone.
- Know before you go: The DriveBC website provides information on latest road conditions, weather, incidents, and special events, such as road construction.
You can also follow DriveBC on Twitter and road conditions can also be accessed toll free at 1 800 550-4997.
- Slow down and move over: If you're approaching a stopped vehicle with a flashing light, you must slow to 70 km/h when in an 80km/h or over zone, and 40km/h when in an under 80km/h zone.
If you're travelling on a multi-lane road, the you must move into another lane to pass a vehicle with a flashing light where safe to do so.
