The BCNE got off to a bit of a slow start Thursday morning, its first day.
There was a delay of about half an hour before the gates were open to the public. People stood in long lines to await entry into the 112th annual exhibition presented by the Prince George Agricultural and Historical Association.
No reason was given for the delay. Once the gates were open, though, all systems were go.
Thursday was Seniors Day, when everyone 55 and up gets in for a toonie, with a Seniors Fair in Kin 3 geared to provide information about resources available in Prince George.
MLA Shirley Bond has been coming to the Seniors’ Fair for years.
“I think with the growing seniors’ population it’s really important for them to know what kinds of resources are available to them in our community,” Bond said. “Our office, for example, comes to provide information and we provide a seniors’ guide so this is a fantastic one-stop shop for seniors to learn about the organizations that can support them in the community.”
Cows Just Wanna Have Fun is the theme for this year’s BCNE.
Bonnie Wager and her cow-hort Nancy Buchanan wrangled themselves into cute cow costumes to trot away with the theme as they represented North Central Seniors Association in Kin 3. The cute cows wandered around, as cattle tend to do, rounding up people to moooo-ve over to their booth for more information about how to get in on the fun.
In Kin 3 and geared for seniors, lunch on a budget was offered for $10 by Chaa Tayo Bubble Tea & Wings, celebrating flavours of the Philippines.
There were 44 organizations with information booths for seniors to explore, including non-profits like seniors’ centres, Red Cross, Hope Air and the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Also in attendance were those focused on health like a dentist, Hearing Life and CNIB. There was also Volunteer PG, Northern Sports Centre, YMCA, along with the Centre for Technology Adoption for Aging in the North up at the university that showcased all the latest on how to make your life easier using the most modern tech.
The Seniors’ Fair was set to continue until 5 p.m. Thursday.
The exhibition continues until Sunday, Aug. 18 at Exhibition Park.
