BCNE in full swing this weekend despite rainy weather

Saturday and Sunday events include SuperDogs, Heritage Lane, the midway, agricultural exhibitions and more

The British Columbia Northern Exhibition (BCNE) continues through the weekend at Exhibition Park, offering a wide range of events and entertainment to close out its four-day run.

Saturday and Sunday will bring mainly cloudy skies with a persistent chance of rain — a 70 per cent chance of showers Saturday, decreasing slightly to 60 per cent Sunday. There’s a risk of thunderstorms on both days. Winds are expected to be gusty from the southwest Saturday at 40 km/h, easing to 20 km/h by Sunday afternoon. Daytime highs will hover around 17 to 18 C, with the UV index reaching a moderate 4 to 5. Overnight lows will dip to 7 C.

Despite the unsettled weather, the BCNE schedule remains packed. Equine competitions continue Saturday with Saddle Up N Sort from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a breakaway warm-up at 6 p.m. Sunday will feature the Breakaway Finals at 9 a.m. and Team Roping at noon.

The SuperDogs show — a perennial crowd favourite — runs Saturday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., and wraps up Sunday with shows at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Saturday evening’s Ale Festival will include live music on the Main Stage, headlined by Appaloosa Band. Other performers include local acts Chris Godwin and Rick Stavely. The night will also feature a Mrs. Roper Romp — a themed costume contest inspired by the classic sitcom Three’s Company.

Those attending the Ale Festival can also take part in a casino night fundraiser in partnership with Spirit of the North. Tickets include gate admission and tastings from local breweries and cideries, with proceeds split between the two organizations.

Visitors can explore Heritage Lane throughout the weekend, which features historical displays and live demonstrations of old-time trades. Attractions include blacksmithing, spinning and weaving, and booths from Huble Homestead, the Railway Museum and others.

Admission to the BCNE includes access to midway rides, shows, vendors and demonstrations — with more than 80 indoor vendors and 15 food trucks on site.
