Construction on the new local home of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU) will be made official today.
BCGEU president Stephanie Smith will be on hand this afternoon for the groundbreaking ceremony at the new office's site at the southeast corner of Fifth Ave. and Quebec St.
The new Diane L. Wood Union Centre will replace the existing office on Fourth Ave. with a three-storey building that's expected to be ready for occupancy next summer.
"The new building will better serve BCGEU members in Prince George and surrounding areas," Smith said on the BCGEU website. "We have a fast-growing membership in the area and we are confident that the new, much larger office will better meet our members' needs."
The ceremony begins at 3 p.m. followed by an open house and reception at the 1040 Fourth Ave. location between 4:30 and 7 p.m.
The city sold the land for the new building last year for $525,000 and a building permit issued in June valued the project at $4 million.
