The free ride on city buses ends on June 1.

On Monday, BC Transit announced it is enhancing safety measures on its buses throughout the province to allow passengers to enter through the front door and collect fares. The measures include temporary vinyl panels to allow physical distancing between the driver and passengers.

BC Transit announced it would only allow passengers to get on and off the bus from the back door, and would not collect fares, in March as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, BC Transit and the City of Prince George also announced that the city's transit system would operate on its reduced summer schedule because of a 50 to 70 per cent decline in ridership.

Other safety measures put in place since March include limiting the number of passengers aboard, enhanced cleaning of buses, and communicating to staff and passengers about proper social distancing procedures.
