Those riding transit in Prince George and are looking for a mask will be able to grab one next week.

The city and BC Transit are teaming up to hand out face coverings on Aug. 20 and 24 with masks becoming mandatory on buses starting Aug. 24.

The transportation company announced on Aug. 6 that the move is meant to be an 'educational step without enforcement' in following the routes of other major Canadian transportation agencies, such as TransLink in Metro Vancouver.

“We recognize the advice from health professionals, including Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, has been to wear face coverings when physical distancing is not possible including on transit vehicles,” a BC Transit release stated.

“Customers have indicated making the use of face coverings mandatory will create a more comfortable environment.”

It adds there’ll be exceptions for children under five years old and for those who can’t wear a face covering for health reasons.

“We will work hard to ensure customers are aware of our new policy over the coming weeks and work together to make transit a comfortable environment for staff and customers.”

Officials will be at the Pine Centre Exchange on Aug. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. and the Spruceland Exchange on Aug. 24 from 8 to 10:30 a.m.
