Yesterday (March 9), the province announced the Brazil variant of COVID-19 (P.1) had officially arrived in the province, with 13 cases linked.

In the north, the age range for those looking to book a COVID-19 immunization appointment has expanded.
As of today (March 10), Northern Health residents aged 80 and older can call to schedule a vaccination.
Monday (March 8) was the first day of registration for eligible seniors aged 90 or older and Indigenous persons 65 years or older, in which Northern Health successfully booked 1,007 appointments.
The authority says its goal is to administer as many as 15,000 doses through clinics in Phase Two of its immunization plan.
According to B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix, the province booked another 14,830 appointments yesterday (March 9).
This means, between the first two days, the grand total is just shy of 30,000 at 29,779.
Dix also says the province has vaccinated 20,000 of the 48,000 seniors 90 years and older through phases one and two of the rollout.
Northern Health saw 792 immunization appointments booked yesterday for a total of 1,799 in two days.
The regional authority says vaccinations are expected to begin throughout the region as early as March 15, 2021.
When calling during your time of eligibility, you will be asked to provide the following:
- First and last name
- Date of birth
- Postal Code
- Personal Health Number
Cell Centre hours are seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Those in Northern Health who are eligible to book are asked to call 1-844-255-7555.
Family members can book on behalf of seniors who may not feel comfortable scheduling their vaccinations on their own.
There is only one clinic currently in operation for Prince George, which is at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre.
More clinics will open as eligibility and vaccinations ramp up.
In the northwest area of the province, concern and transmission continue to rise rapidly, especially in schools, which has prompted officials to bump vaccination plans in certain areas.
In the past day and a half, Northern Health has issued 15 COVID-19 exposure events for numerous schools throughout the region, particularly School Districts 82 (Coast Mountains) and 54 (Bulkley Valley).
Things continue to go from bad to worse in northwest B.C. Northern Health has issued 15 COVID-19 exposure event alerts for numerous schools throughout the region. As officials struggle to contain clusters, outbreaks and transmission, Northern Health announced yesterday (March 9) a whole-community approach to vaccinated residents is being brought to Prince Rupert.
“Prince Rupert has a high COVID-19 case rate and high positivity rate, that has not seen the improvements in recent weeks that are occurring elsewhere in the region,” Northern Health Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Jong Kim said in a statement.
“Quickly vaccinating the entire community is a great way to protect everyone in Prince Rupert, and keep them safe.”

Locally, a 24th Prince George-based school is being alerted of a COVID-19 exposure event.
Northern Health says Hart Highlands Elementary has been warned for potential exposure on March 1, 2021 as students and staff mayhave come into contact with somebody who recently tested positive for the virus.
Northern Health's school-exposure section explains the following:
- Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
- We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
- Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
- Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
- Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
