B.C. reports 14 new COVID-19 deaths, Northern Health records additional 38 cases

COVID-19 numbers and deaths in B.C. remain high.

In a written statement this afternoon (Jan. 26), Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 407 more COVID-19 cases recorded in the past 24 hours for a grand total of 65,234 since January last year. 

Of those, Northern Health recorded 38 more infections for an updated authority total of 3.251. 

B.C. health officials also announced 14 more virus-linked deaths, which brings the fatality rate to 1,168.

There are 4,260 people listed as active for COVID-19 throughout the province, 313 of whom are in hospital with 71 in critical care.

A total of 58,352 have been classified as fully recovered.

“The number of new daily cases of COVID-19 is much higher than we want it to be," Officials said this afternoon.

"We are asking for everyone’s help to bend our curve back down. This is especially critical with the presence of variant viruses in our province.

“With each new case, we have the opportunity to stop the virus in its tracks, break the chains of transmission and bring our numbers down.

"Each of us has the ability to do that."

Henry revealed yesterday (Jan. 25) two more cases of the COVID-19 strain first identified in South Africa have been diagnosed in B.C., bringing the total to three and all of whom were community-detected and no travel involved.

The latest situation report posted Friday (Jan. 22) by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) also shows six cases of the strain first found in the United Kingdom, all of which are linked to travel. 

The steady pace of vaccinations is set to be disrupted as the province expects a drop in new supplies during the next couple weeks.

Henry explained the first and second doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will now be administered 42 days apart for the time being.

Pfizer last week informed Canadian officials last week that it would not be sending any vaccine doses to the country this week as the pharmaceutical giant attempts to revamp its manufacturing capacity in Europe.

“For the many who have been doing your part, you may be asking, ‘What more can I do?’ Be the voice of support and encouragement for those who may be wavering in their resolve," Henry stated again today. 

“For the few who have chosen to put aside the public health precautions we all need to follow and make exceptions for themselves, now is your time to join or rejoin us in our efforts.

"It is never to late to be a part of the team who is making a difference every day across our province."

In the past few days, there has been a flurry of COVID-19 activity in the north. 

Northern Health also issued a COVID-19 exposure alert for a Prince George shelter earlier today. 

The authority asks that anyone who visited Active Support Against Poverty (ASAP) between Jan. 19 and 21 should self-monitor for symptoms. 

"Public health officials are asking people who visited the shelter during this time period, to take extra care to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 until February 5, 2021," its statement reads. 

"Public health contact tracing is underway and, where possible, NH is reaching out directly to individuals who have been exposed."

Northern Health adds if people remain healthy and develop no symptoms, there is no need to self-isolate and can continue with their usual daily activities while continuing to follow all COVID-19 safety measures. 

Deaths also continue to rise in the northern region, with BC Hydro announcing yesterday that a worker at the project died from the virus. 

BC Hydro spokesman Dave Conway said Monday (Jan. 25) the company learned of the death over the weekend, and that the individual worked for one of its contractors.

“This case was concluded to have been from a community transmission and not the result of an onsite transmission,” Conway said.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to individual’s family, friends and co-workers. Out of respect for the person’s family, we will not be providing any further information at this time."

BC Hydro has reported 40 cases of COVID-19 among the Site C workforce since the pandemic began last March.

Of those, seven cases are listed as active, while 33 cases have been cleared.

As of Jan. 25, there were 942 workers reported at camp, including three in self-isolation.

Three additional deaths were also reported yesterday amid the ongoing outbreak at UHNBC's Internal Medicine Unit with the death toll now at eight. 

There are currently 33 lab-confirmed cases associated with the outbreak, including 21 patients and 12 staff after an additional case was found in a patient.

It's one of two outbreaks in Prince George the regional authority is tending to.

Jubilee Lodge appears to be doing better as Northern Health's last update had only reported one new positive test for the virus for a to-date total of 62 since Dec. 12 with only two active cases and 32 recoveries.

No new deaths were reported, keeping the toll at 14.

The outbreak at UHNBC's Rehabilitation Unit has been declared over after only detecting three cases since Jan. 4 and none new since Jan. 9.
