B.C. records one additional COVID-19 death, 559 new cases

B.C. COVID-19 case numbers remain high, but deaths in the province are declining.

In an on-camera briefing this afternoon (Feb. 23), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said 559 more COVID-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours for a grand provincial total of 77,822.

Of those, Northern Health found 66 new infections for an updated authority total of 4,417.

Officials announced another death today, which brings the province's toll to 1,336.

There are currently 4,677 active cases throughout B.C. with 238 people currently hospitalized, 69 of which are in ICU or critical care.

A total of 71,753 have been classified as fully recovered. 

As of this publication, the north continues to hold the highest COVID-19 positivity rate in all of B.C. according to the latest BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) data. 

Northern Health's seven-day moving average comes in at 12.9 per cent as of Feb. 21, 2021. 

For comparison, Fraser Health is 8.2 per cent, Vancouver Coastal Health is reporting six per cent, Interior Health currently holds 4.5 per cent and Island Health sits at 3.2 per cent during the same time period. 

B.C.'s seven-day moving average for COVID-19 positivity rate has increased slightly to 6.8 per cent. 

In education, Northern Health flagged two Prince George schools for exposure events. 

The health authority says people may have been exposed in the Lac des Bois Elementary community from Feb. 16-17, 2021. 

Since classrooms opened in September, the French immersion facility is the 20th School District 57 (SD57) member to be warned for the virus. 

Meanwhile, Spruceland Traditional Elementary was also alerted this morning for a second COVID-19 exposure event during Feb. 10-12, 2021.

Unless contacted directly by public health officials, students and staff is asked to monitor their symptoms for a 14-day period. 

Northern Health's school-exposure section also explains the following:

  • Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
  • We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
  • Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
    • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
  • Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
