B.C. records 10 additional COVID-19 deaths, Northern Health adds 41 new cases

COVID-19 numbers recorded a large drop in the past day.

In an on-camera briefing this afternoon (Feb. 25), Provincia Heath Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said 395 cases of the virus were detected since Wednesday (Feb. 24), bringing the provincial total to 78,673.

Of the new cases, Northern Health recorded 41, bringing the authority total to 4,478 since the virus hit the region in March.

Officials announced 10 more deaths linked to COVID-19 today, which brings the province's toll to 1,348.

One took place in Northern Health, according to Health Minister Adrian Dix, raising the region's fatality total to 106.

There are currently 4,489 active cases throughout B.C. with 228 people currently hospitalized, 62 of which are in ICU or critical care.

The good news, Prince George has seen a decrease in COVID-19 cases, according to the latest data from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). 

From Feb. 14-20, 2021, the local health area recorded 70 cases which is still the highest count in the north. 

Peace River South added 22 cases, while the Peace River North region saw 31 total cases.

The Nechako area added an additional four cases and Quesnel saw another two. 

In education, a total of 20 schools in School District 57 (SD57) have been flagged for exposure events among 23 Prince George-based schools alerted since the start of the school this past September.

Northern Health's school-exposure section also explains the following:

  • Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
  • We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
  • Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
    • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
  • Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
