An investigation has concluded into a matter involving a Prince George man's injuries during an arrest in May 2019.

Today (March 25, 2021), the Independent Investigation Office of B.C. (IIO) says no charges are being considered for RCMP's actions after a suspect sustained injuries while being taken into custody the night of May 11, 2019.

Around 8:30 p.m. that evening, Mounties saw a man on a bicycle that wasn't wearing a helmet and was weaving between road lanes near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Douglas Street.

Officers stopped the cyclist to issue a violation ticket, but was also arrested for unrelated offences.

As they transported the man to RCMP cells, a struggle ensued on Alward Street and he sustained what was described as a serious injury.

He received medical attention the next morning (May 12, 2019), a release states.

After the IIO was called in and an investigation took place, its Chief Civilian Director explains there's no evidence that any of the officers involved committed an offence during the incident.

Instead, B.C.'s police watchdog says the matter is now going back to Prince George RCMP in considering solving potential issues in prisoner care.

The decision was based on several pieces of evidence that included witness statements, medical records, detachment video and police records.
