BC Parks has closed all provincial parks in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move, announced Wednesday, was made in advance of the Easter long weekend and in response to federal and provincial directives that people should stay close to home to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.

Closures in northern B.C. had previously been limited to Ancient Forest-Chun T'oh Whudujut east of Prince George and Liard Hotsprings near Fort Nelson.

"Because physical distancing works, it is critical that we take every action needed to restrict the spread of COVID-19," said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. "This applies to British Columbians and out-of-province visitors who were planning to visit or stay at our provincial parks."

A ban on all camping in provincial parks was also extended to May 31 and matches a ban in place at national parks. Refunds for bookings up to May 31 will be sent automatically.

All Recreation Sites and Trails B.C. campgrounds and amenities also remain closed.
