If you're a B.C. Hydro customer, you'll want to be on the lookout for a new phishing scam.
The company says they have received dozens of reports of a spoof B.C. Hydro email address that tries to trick people into providing their private banking information.
"The scale of this attempt is unprecedented as it is known that thousands of emails are being sent out to addresses across the country," a B.C. Hydro release says.
In the email, customers are asked to click on a link to access account refunds by submitting banking information.
B.C. Hydro says none of the following would occur from the company:
- It does not offer refunds or credits through Interac E-Transfer
- It does not collect credit card or bank account information through emails
- If a customer doubts the authenticity of an email, they should call BC Hydro immediately at 1-800-BCHYDRO or check their 'my account' on BC MyHydro
"Customers should be wary of any messages that seem suspicious or unexpected, including an unexpected email that references account or billing status that seems to be incorrect," the release adds.
B.C. Hydro also recommends if you think you've been a victim of fraud, to contact their local police department and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
