British Columbians will continue to be under orders from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry for another month.

Henry appeared in front of cameras this afternoon (Jan. 7), where she announced 761 newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases in the past day while also announcing current public health orders will stay in place until Feb. 5, 2021.

This includes mandatory masks in all indoor public and retail spaces, no organized public gatherings of size and gatherings with people outside your immediate household, along with a ban on indoor and outdoors sports for adults aged 22 and older.

"Our curve is trending upwards," Henry said. "Now is our time to stay the course. We know what we need to do to bend that curve back down. We have been successful in doing that prior to this winter break, and we need to do that again."

Another two cases of the COVID-19 variant have been discovered with Henry saying the two new cases involve household contact. The total is now three.

Of the newly announced cases, Northern Health has added 64 for a regional total of 2,338 out of 56,015 across B.C. since the pandemic began a year ago.

There are 6,349 people listed as active for COVID-19 throughout the province, 372 are in hospital with 74 in critical care. There are 38 people hospitalized in Northern Health.

A total of 47,374 have been classified as fully recovered.

Henry announced another eight deaths in B.C in the past day which raises the fatality rate to 970.

Health officials cite the rise of case numbers recently and the curve starting to go upwards as reasoning for the health orders to be extended.

As of publication, Northern Health has not issued any updates for the COVID-19 outbreak at the Internal Medicine Unit in UHNBC, which has claimed a life and seen 21 positive cases to date involving 10 patients at 11 staff.

An outbreak was also declared on Jan. 5 at the Rehab Unit in the hospital after a positive case was discovered but the authority says there's no evidence of further transmission and public health officials are continuing to monitor the situation with ongoing testing.

The death toll is 12 at Jubilee Lodge in Prince George after an outbreak was declared on Dec. 12.

There have been a total of 60 infections in the long-term care facility which includes 48 residents and 12 staff.
