Another former city councillor was awarded Prince George's highest honour.

Don Bassermann received the Freedom of the City on Friday night, during the 100th Anniversary Civic Appreciation Dinner.

"Don is extremely deserving of this honour," said Mayor Lyn Hall, in a press release. "Freedom of the City is meant to recognize exceptional merit and contribution - two terms that I believe are synonymous with Don."

A well-known community booster, Bassermann served six terms on council and has also sat on the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George board of directors and chaired the Omenica Beetle Action Coalition. He has worked as an educator and administrator and currently sits as a board member for the Barkerville Heritage Trust and the Northern Agricultural Initiative Advisory Committee.

Bassermann is also a past board member of Tourism Prince George, the 2015 Canada Winter Games bid committee and Two Rivers Gallery.

Bassermann joins a short list of a dozen other individuals and one group who have previously received Freedom of the City. Last year, the honour went to former city councillor Cliff Dezell. Shirley Gratton, Anne Martin, Colin Kinsley, John Backhouse, Harold Moffatt, Garvin Dezell, Carrie Jane Gray, Pastor Lance Morgan, Ted Williams, Chief Justice J.O. Wilson, Peter Wilson and the Rocky Mountain Rangers have also received the award.
