Three Central Interior Aboriginal communities have each received $40,000 from the first round of funding from the provincial government's First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund.
The Kwadach band, formerly Fort Ware, received its grant to develop a biomass system and replace the existing diesel power supply. The band is located at the north end of the Finlay and Kwadacha rivers past the north end of Williston Lake.
The grant to the Ulkatcho First Nations will pay for a feasibility study for a five-megawatt biomass system. The community is located at Anahim Lake, 325 kilometres west of Williams Lake.
The Canoe Creek Indian Band, 140 kilometres southwest of Williams Lake, will use its grant to assess and enable the exploration of clean energy projects.
Biomass systems usually burn wood waste to supply electricity. The grants were announced this week.
