An avalanche has closed Highway 16 East near Mount Robson.

The slide is on Shale Hill and is about 400 metres wide, North District RCMP Cst. Lesley Smith said in a statement issued late Monday morning.

"Highway 16 East is completely blocked and there are no detours available," Smith said.

Ministry of Transportation continue to assess the incident and an avalanche technician is en route to the area at this time. Lakes District Maintenance crews are on scene assessing the scale and scope of the slide.

No vehicles were buried in the avalanche, Smith has since confirmed.

Ministry of Transportation has advised that the risk of additional slides is very high and it is too dangerous to enter the current slide area to look for vehicles.

Flagging crews are being put in place at both ends of the slide and in Jasper, Tete Jaune, McBride, and Valemount.

Highway 1 is also currently closed indefinitely due to the risk of avalanches.
