August clocked in cool, but dry

While it may not have been as bad as July, August did not completely provide the late-summer reprieve many Prince George residents had been hoping for.

While it may not have been as bad as July, August did not completely provide the late-summer reprieve many Prince George residents had been hoping for.

According to a preliminary report from Environment Canada, last month was cooler than normal, but far from setting any records.

There were only 14 days with a maximum temperature of 20 degrees or higher, when normally there would be 19 days. Only two days last month breached 25 degrees. The warmest day came near the end of the month, when it hit 25.4 degrees on Aug. 20. This was quickly followed by the Aug. 25 overnight drop to 0.1 degrees.

The warmest August on record happened 20 years ago, when there was a mean temperature of 17.2 degrees in 1981. This year, the mean temperature was a middling 13.6 degrees.

After the deluge in the July, August was dry in comparison, with a little more than half of the normal precipitation for the month. Measurable rainfall only occurred on eight days instead of the typical 13 days, with the most (11.2 mm) falling Aug. 22.

However, most didn't need a thermometer to know the summer was drearier than usual. Over the past three months, the mean temperature was more than a degree below the normal 14.5 degrees.
